 | I dont think you can divorce Paul Simon from Art Garfunkel so easily and so simply. Being an S&G fan does not mean you are less of a Paul Simon fan. Who knows what Paul Simon may or may not have been without Garfunkel. Paul wrote the songs and noone denies his musical genius but the power the two voices and the effect added by Garfunkel´s voice should not be taken lightly. I have the songbook and it´s wonderful but would Simon have made back then on his own singing folk...who knows, though in the climate I kinda doubt it what with Dylan being the ultimate folk singer/writer and the emerging and growing dominance of the Beatles...Simon and Garfunkel had something different - the duo, which at least was a novelty and extra selling point.
Probably not a popular opinion, but there ya go!! :) |

 | Rosamund, I for one agree with you one hundred % I think you can be a PS fan without denying AG´s obvious talent. Where there´s 2 fighting, there´s usually 2 to blame, so I´d say, lets enjoy AG´s vocal talent and not bash him. I seriously doubt either of them would be where they are today if it hadn´t been for the other. |

 | You can easely Rosamund. If you are born in 1978 and your first PS album was Graceland, ROTS, Capeman, OTP, YTO - well, there isn´t any connection to Art Garfunkel on all of them. You hear him live singin a complete other version of Cecilia, Bridge or SOS with electric guitar. All in all you never think about a person named Art Garfunkel whom you miss there. It´s 30 years of Paul Simon solo and 7 years of S&G.
Even I don´t know a Sting fan who is missing the Police. Or a Cher fan who is missing Bono...

 | Also I would say that Paul Simon would have become a musician for 100%. Maybe never that famous as S&G, but as famous as he is/was solo in the 70´s and 80´s. |

 | I think to say he would have been as good is simply an opinion and is speculation, what I´m saying is who knows...
Also, the solo material didn´t just appear...it was the product in many ways of years of folk, years of finding his character, his voice both physically and musically. His solo career was supported and was built on the success of his S&G career. All music borrows in some way from music gone before, and every writer simply builds on what he himself has written and done before.
Plus, the idea of harmony which AG talks about is something I believe in a lot...the simple beauty of the songs (maybe Im a folksy at heart) is more than enough reason for AG to be there. Of course Simon wrote them and takes all credit for them, rightly so, but AG´s voice embellishes them and gives them a colour which one voice cannot. I have yet to find folk music which is simply so beautiful and which uses two voices so imaginatively.
Also, you cannot deny that at that time, there were plenty of folk rockers strumming away(obviously, without the talent of PS) but the idea of two voices was totally novel and different (well since the everly brothers, who of course were a huge influence on PS)...a definite selling point.
Also, as I said PS was hugely influenced by the everly brothers and other harmony groups.
Btw, Bodo, great website! |
