 | Actually, thinking of what you say, Bodo, there isn´t much at all in this country about Simon. We seem to be overloaded with documentaries on other stars but somehow PS/S&G stuff is rarely shown. There must be loads of early clips in the archives that could be unearthed, none more than the"IMPOSSIBLE TO GET FROM GRANADA TELEVISION" 1966 black and white concert from Manchester.I know it is sat in a vault no more than 30 minutes away from where I live....AND I CAN´T get it!!! |

 | Bing, I know that a lot of TV channels nowadays sell VHS tapes or DVD´s of programms they´ve shown.
It´s expensive, costs about 30 Euros for a show from the last 30 days, and 60 Euros for everything they have in their archive.
But often this is limited to productions they have produced, and not for concerts.
BUT, I know someone from the Netherlands who got such a tape from 1966 from a Dutch-TV station (it´s the Haarlem 1966 video)
The strangest thing is that most artists even don´t know that there has been a video made (if it´s back in the 60´s)
A good example is the story about Miriam Makeba. A swedish fan had knewn that back in the late 60´s a TV station recorded a show of her, and he had a music-tape of it. At a concert in Sweden he had the chance to talk to Miriam Makeba, he gave her the tape as a gift... Miriam was surprised that anything like that exist´s - and a few months later they released together with the TV station a DVD with that performance.
I believe there are a lot of concert recordings of Paul Simon in some archives, but no one is interested in releasing them... or knows about them. If no one is interested in such a tape, then who will ever look for it? |

 | Fascinating story about the Miriam Makeba tape, Bodo.I wonder if we got in touch with Paul Simon´s office and mentioned this 1966 Granada television show to them they might swing a bit of weight and get it aired or even better released on DVD??This has been a challenge of mine to get hold of this concert for years, I even wrote to Granada and got a reply saying they COULDN´T sell me a copy due to the involvement of copyright concerning all involved in the production.I have since learned thet you NEVER TAKE YOUR FIRST FIVE NO´S from people as the answer usually lies elsewhere.I think we need to generate enough interest in this concert as to arouse some interest with the people close to S&G and also realise the renewed interest and new fans who have come to know their music as a result of the recent tour.I am a bit passionate about this quest and hope that between ourselves and the forum we can generate some interest from someone. |

 | Sounds like the legal fees for amending the copyrights might be more than the profits expected from the sale of the programme. But maybe they would broadcast the show if there was enough interest shown. Why not post the Granada archive email address on other fan websites, (and this one) to make it easy for a demand to build? |

 | Unfortunately the german translation of the Omnibus-Special is horrible.
But back to Simon`s speech. His clear pronounciation is something he learned from his singing. His phrasing is superb, especially in the studio. Who could perform "Late In The Evening" like him?
His speaking (we know him from the situation being filmed!) with so many interruptions by himself is probably because of fear saying something wrong.
But he can be spontaneous too:
In 1980 a ("famous") woman for an english rock series asked him, whether he misses the songwriting contributions of Garfunkel. After a polite clarifying, that he wrote all the songs alone, he was very fast on the stupid reply, whether this fact is commonly known: "I guess by everyone except you."
More funny, he was asked, again by a woman (means no complain) in 1983, who mentioned his sentence in another interview, where he stated having a superior brain and an inferior stature, whether he suffers being so small. He said, very fast: "Yes." Nothing else.
And enjoyed the expected confusion.
The woman was "speechless". After quite a while, he repeated "Yes". And after another pause he finally delivered her: "Well, I`m rethinking about the superior brain..."

 | Not directly connected, but funny too. He performed a small part of "Citizen of the planet" in 1982 in the by then still existing David Letterman show.
This came from Lettermans suggestion, he should sing another song (after "The late great Johnny Ace" earlier in the show with guitar-trouble).
Simon :"Maybe we should sing a song together?" Letterman: "No, not even if it would ensure world peace."
Then he performed the very small finished part of this anti-nuclear song, much more impressive than on the new DVD in almost sixties S&G-Sound. |
