Interesting article! Shows, that Simon, though he wrote some "protest" songs at that time like "A Church Is Burning", "He Was My Brother", "The side of a hill" (strong melody!) and later ("Peace Like A River", "American Tune") never was a folkie like Dylan or Pete Seeger or Joan Baez.

He always was interested in private life and saw the problems of being involved in political affairs as a prominent, maybe influencing people who like him for his music but not for his political opinions.

In 1991 Simon filled the "Olympiahalle" in Munich and "blew the crowd away" with his 17-members-band. Great concert for visitors and critics.

One day later Bob Dylan, not at a high point of his career, played in Munich too at "Circus Crone", and did not fill it though it had only half (means 5.000) capacity. He was drunk, and a musician called Konstantin Wecker, at that time quite popular in Austria and Germany, criticized him as being drunk (which he often was at that time) and "not fighting". (Ironically, K. Wecker was sentenced for using drugs himself years later).

I`m almost sure, that the two songwriter-legends did not meet then for a conversation. But they were on tour meanwhile, that`s good.

You´re right Klausi...i Love the "private life" side in his song...i´m not really fond of what we call "the protest singers", especially now...it is easy and not very interesting to say: "war is not good" or "peace everywhere"...

Paul has his own style and Bob has (or rather had) his own. One can not say which one is the right way of writing - they are different. What Bob Dylan did in the early sixties (1962-1963 - after Freewheelin´ Bob Dylan he didn´t write much protest music) was very unique and original but later protest songs became something that every musician did and then the whole protest song thing suffered from a big inflation.

What a huge mistake by News Scotsman.com!!! They apparently didn´t see Paul perform on the Old Friends tour.....;-)

His letter to the club, dated June 12, 1964, was discovered in the club?s archive after its recent acquisition by the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office.

Simon, now 76, said in the letter: ?I record for Columbia Records in the States and will cut my first LP for Topic Records over here.

Of course the 60s folk revival threw up many "protest" singers like Dylan, Baez, etc but there was none better deserving of the "protest" singer label as the great Phil Ochs.He was so great he even gets a mention in one of the early Simon & Garfunkel bootlegs!!!!Worth a listen, especially his live stuff. If you do nothing else get hold of his version of "The Highwayman" (from the poem).Ochs died in 1976, bit of a sad story when you read about him.Ochs once heard two female fans, in the lobby after one of his concerts saying they hadn´t enjoyed it....Ochs walked over to the box office, banged his fist on the counter and demanded that the two fans get their money back!!They don´t make stars like that anymore.Go out and invest in a "Best of Phil Ochs".(No, I am NOT on commission!!)

You will surely find many "Paul Simons" in the world, because both, "Paul" and "Simon" are well known in many countries.

Simon (the one we mean) himself joked about it in his special 1978, when Chales Grodin wanted to call it "The Paul - Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon Special" because of the "recognition- factor".

Whereas Simon said, that it would be not very likely that the other Paul Simons (the Politician and a painter were mentioned) would have their own special.

Grodin: "these days, everybody could have his own special. I just don`t see how it can hurt us, it can only help us".
