The most likely version is that the song was not complete before 1993, and this means probably at least the lyrics, as Mimi said.

Simon always copyrighted his material as soon as ready, see Still crazy in 1974, all songs on One-trick pony 1978 or 1979 etc.

It would be too risky if anybody else would steal the things he has heard; Simon has a lot of experiences about that, on both sides...

Klusi,That makes sense. I remember reading somewher that Paul Did ROTS by first "writing" the rythem, then the melody and last the lyrics. He clearly wrote the lyrics to "Thelma" later.

I agree on that, he could have changed the lyrics in some parts - because in 1990 the song even had another title...maybe he updated the song from Carrie Fisher to Edie Brickel ;-)

But he lies...he caught her :-)

BTW, the song was called "the shuffle tune" and later retitled to "Thelma."

The shuffle tune is really a strange title... but who is Thelma :-)

Well I think it is Edie, because the song is (unusually) fitting and personal. The big difference of age, the baby.

Maybe even the line "Time zones and oceans apart" is related to him being on tour.

I can`t think of another song since 1970 so personal.

Reminds me somehow to the verse "I know a father who had a song, he longed to tell him..." in Slip slidin away, but much more optimistic this time.

"Everything else becomes nothing at all".

Well of course the father had many songs, but here his son is meant...

Fortunately he still has more songs than sons...

Hope that will not change.

I think the real question here is not about the song itself, but about the WEIRD music video that goes with it!
I am sure that most people here have seen it.
I know that he is basically saying that his Love for Thelma is everywhere, the clouds in the sky, on people´s hats,in a circus tent etc.... Shout it out everywhere!
But it is STILL a weird video.

If you go to the MTV links posted in the Paul and Chevy thread, you will be able to see the video to Thelma. Be prepared though, for a Twilight Zone kind of experience. Let me know what you think!

You know, I use to have the same problems. The screen would go blank or stay black. The worst of it was the picture would just slow to a crawl or just freeze. You could hear the music, but the picture was frozen. I don´t have those problems anymore. What worked for me (at least for my computer) were two things: upgrading to DSL and most important of all, upgrading Internet Explorer to 6 or higher. After I did that, I had no more problems. Now I can watch any video from anywhere with clarity and smoothness.
If these things don´t work, you could try contacting a computer proffesional. They can give you great advise and it´s usually free of charge.
So Bodo, what did you think of Thelma? I am sorry, but I do not consider it to be one of his better ones. The idea of circus performers or ice skaters going in circles, (of course let´s not forget the people being shot out of a cannon) does not really have the feel of what Thelma is about. Of course that´s just my opinion.

It is really strange what is going on there...they put 10 rare Paul Simon videos on the web, but only 10% of all people can watch them :- How senseless...

a bit of a silly question, but how much say does paul actually have in his videos? who helps him make them?
