I always find this a strange song...Not that I mean the song is strange...lol but the sircumstances.

Thelma was supposed to have been cut from ROTS, yet when you listen to the lyrics it is very obvious, to me anyway, that Paul is talking of Edie and baby Adrian and ROTS was before Paul & Edie married.

Yes, like I said, very strange.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that today. This song was like a foreshadow of his life, but he still hadn´t even met Edie yet. "People aware of my history, trying to steer you away from me." I Love that line. Actually I just love the song in general.

That is really strange. I always asumed it was written about Edie and their first child. are you sure that it was written befor he met her?! that is wiered.

Paul has met Edie in 1986 the first time as far as I know. I´m sure they have been a couple for years before the got married. Why does everyone assume that Paul and Edie didn´t know each other before they got married..strange to me :-)

The song was not recorded for ROTS, but has its Copyright in 1993, meant as "gift" for the 1964/1993 / Anthology Greatest Hits-set, which was really not his first.

Rereleases of Old material on CD was getting cheaper and cheaper since the compact disk made its way in the mid-eighties.

By the way "Graceland" was the best selling CD for quite a while.

Klausi is right. it was supposed to be the eleventh song for ROTS, but het decided against it because the people who heard the album seemed to have grown a bit tired by the the tike they got there. Jeroen

I don´t know what we are talking here about, but the song Thelma was recorded in 1990, not after ROTS and so not in 1993, and it was supposed to be ON ROTS, but he decided against it. So Klausi is not right. ...whatever

Hmmm, i am not an expert but i don´t agree with you Bodo: Paul and Edie met in December 1990...the copyright of Thelma says 1993 and this song is clearly about Edie...and yes, she was probably pregnant before they married (Adrian is born in december 1992)...so i can say that they lived in the sin!!! :-)

Maybe the lyrics were added or changed later? Just a guess.

Marieno is right. Everyone thinks that they met on the SNL show Edie was on in 1986. It´s true that she and New Bohemians were on that year to promote ´What I am from´ their new album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, but that was not the SNL show that Paul and Edie met, it was in 1990 when New Bohemians was promoting songs from their second album Ghost of a Dog. Edie was quoted as saying, "That was the frist time we laid eyes on each other and I knew this was the Love of my life."
Ahhhh how romantic.
I believe that the song was written about Edie. I never had any doubt especially with lyrics like, "She´s beautiful but too young to be caught." Hello?? wake up!
