Hey,

My favourite S&G/PS song is probably "America." Apart from the beautiful lyrics/melody typical of so many of Paul´s songs, I think what makes the song stand out is the musicianship of the instrumentalists.

I Love the drumming part, I think it´s like a heartbeat accompanying his emotional lyrics, and so perfectly pitched, a banging drum in the middle of a soft song like that.

I also really like another instrument on the song, a flute is it? I´m not sure. Probably not a flute! It wanders in and out of the lyric, particularly in evidence after the "bow tie is really a camera" line. Again I think it complements the song beautifully, flitting about like Paul´s heart, and up and down like the emotions of young lovers. Absolutely perfect. Such a beautiful song it makes me nearly cry sometimes.

But I have no idea who plays these instruments. Does anybody else? I have checked my Bookends album and there´s nothing, although I don´t have an original vinyl so maybe it´s on that?

I hope this doesn´t show my ignorance, and that in fact Paul is a well known drummer and flute player who plays all the instruments on all his songs!

It is definitely Hal Blaine on the Drums. He is the greatest studio drummer of all-time.
