I didn´t doubt he (Art) had an audience . . . I was just saying that he does not have the mass "commercial" success that Paul´s solo career has. I´m sure that goes for a lot of performers . . . they are popular, but in a different sense. Art is beloved by mnay people, to be sure, I was just saying that it´s Paul who´s in the Songwriter´s Hall Of Fame, Rock N´ Roll Hall Of Fame twice (solo and S&G), earned music doctorates from Yale University -- amd was it also Harvard? -- and has the status of a music icon standing by himself, not Art. Having said that, Simon & Garfunkel would not be the same without Art´s angelic voice, that I can admit, and I do respect his impressive vocal abilities. Many people do. But he is not renowned on his own like Paul is.

If you took away S&G, Paul´s solo work would alone define him as a success. Not as big as a success as when you also count S&G, of course, but a very big success in his own right without S&G anyway. I was saying without S&G, Art Garfunkel would still be loved, but his name wouldn´t ring too many bells for people in general, you know?

1.4 million people? Very impressive. It´s a shame I haven´t heard of all this . . . perhaps I should pay more attention, or maybe these facts are just not given enough attention?

And even if Paul´s solo songs don´t have the generation-defining status like his S&G songs do, they have brought him critical acclaim and respect for being much more mature than the ones written during the S&G period. Personally, I think his solo songs are much better in those terms.

Ok, I just checked google. There are not many sources mentioning this concert (if it was a concert)

Sofia has 1.5 million inhabitants.. if there are really 1.4 million fan´s of Artie then he should move to this city ;-)

Ahh, yes. Mickey - I was about to extend that post, but something came between. In essential it means that I´m ashamed of myself.

Brandy - I owe you an apology. I´m sorry, I was also rather angry when I replied to you.

Now that you´ve clarified how you meant some things, I´m not feeling very proud.

Now it´s my turn to clarify myself, I think.
"PS hasn´t been remarkably successful either" - here I was really meaning that, not many people of the younger generations have heard of PS. Now, before anybody stones me - it´s true, they haven´t!
I think you´d find, if you did a survey, that at least here there´s thirty persons before you find one who has heard about S&G (remember younger generations mean 29 and down, sort of) and at least fifty before you find somebody who has heard about PS solo-wise.
I don´t know how long you´d have to ask to find somebody who´s heard his solo work, 75?

It´s a real shame, because now that I am not in a state of delusionary-righteous anger, I am more than ready to admit his genius.
Paul has done so many wonderful songs?

I suppose the only comfort I can give myself is that I react exactly the same way if somebody attacks Paul instead of Art? Oh, sigh?

I still don?t agree with Art?s behaviour towards his fans, but maintain that I think it?s understandable. There?s been horror stories about Paul, too, and unfortunately some of them are also true, I?ve understood.
Perhaps we should try to think of them as humans first, celebrities second?

What else?
Oh, yes and regarding that record? it was in Sofia, yes, but it was actually only 1.200 000 people, (I cannot believe I just wrote ?only? about 1.200 000) and it was at a street intersection. I didn?t mean to indicate he had an official concert record, I suppose I, well -and know that admitting this makes me feel sheepish and awkward- was just trying to point out Art?s just as good. Erm. Yes.
(Sheesh, no wonder the two of them have fought over the years, when not even their fans can keep together ;) )

Do forgive me,
E-like

Elin...I don´t know what concerts you´ve been to etc. But in my experience Paul IS well known amongst many young people. And I´m talking teens and down. When I went to see Paul there was plenty of youngsters there. At NaLS we had alot of young people who were big fans of Paul and I think Nath maybe able to back me up on that one.

I have a good and close friend who has just turned 18 and has been a fan of Pauls since she was about 10. So I´m sorry I must disagree with you on that one hon.

*laughs* Quite all right, Micky, I´ll probably live even if you don´t agree.

Sure, of course there´d be plenty of youngsters, too.
Even just one in every 75th person eventually makes a crowd...

Kiss kiss,

Ok , I haven´t ever counted the young and Old fan´s at PS concerts, but at least it is a fact that Paul Simon has an paying audience of (abolute minimum) 3000 to ~ 20.000 people at his concerts. From AG I´ve heard of concerts having 400 visitors only, and mainl he is attracting old S&G fans(50/50% IMO) at his shows by singin a lot of their 60´s songs in their original way. PS alone has his own audience now(90/10 %)

And everyones audience isn´t very young because their concerts are too expensive for people < 18. They can see their bands and idols for 20 - 35 euros, while PS costs 60 Euros(so they will not even give it a try ... but thats Simon´s problem...)

I must say I´m not at all bothered about this insult incident. I wish there were stories like this about Paul! What I mean is that if we think these guys are extraordinary then we must be prepared to consider them as such in every context. I think you have to be an extremely sensitive person to come up with Simon´s lyrics and music or Art´s emotional voice so if you appreciate this be ready to take it all...also thier eccentricness(which is by the way very scarse anyway). I aslo feel the same way about Art´s pot habit. Appart from the fact that I´ma regular pot smoker I hated how some of the press really came down hard on him. If you want the artist you gotta take it all...ill-temper,mild drug habit and pet tigers in the back yard!

Well Brandy, although I am not a teen now, 37 yikes!, when I fell for his music I was very young. I was about 5 the first time I heard the music of Paul Simon, it was BOTW and I thought it was great. When I fell for his solo work I was about 15 and I loved his music and I thought he was great looking, much like Edie did when she saw the cover of Paul Simon at a friends house. He has lovely eyes.

Enough said...lol
