 | here we have my favorite S&G album. i Love almost everything about this album. alomst every song on here is great.
i think that the album starts beautifully with the Bookends Theme (Instrumental). America is one of the most beautiful and greatest songs i have ever heard. Overs is one of my favorite songs that paul has ever written (the sound him him lighting and smoking a cigarette in the beginning always gives me a wonderful craving for one). i hardly ever listen to Voices of Old People, but i still think that it is a great track. it gives such a wonderful atmosphere to the album and speaks so much about their fears of growing old, which paul mentions in the next song. Old Friends is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. it is honest and imaginative. an incredible show of pauls talent and spectrum of thought at a younger age. Old Friends and Bookends Theme belong together. i never think of them as being saperate. it is also beautiful. i am not completely sure why, but i have always loved Fakin´ It. i think that it is because of its honesty. well, of course, Mrs. Robinson is a song that is tied tightly with the name Simon and Garfunkel. it is a wonderful song.
i could listen to this album over and over again. there are so many great things about it. it is my number 1 S&G release. the only bad thing that i have to say about this album is that some of the songs dont tug me as strong as the others. the songs that are good on this album are incredible so songs that are just good really pale in comparison and end up kind of being forgotten although i could listen to this whole album through without a problem.
tell me your thoughts!

 | There are a lot of songs I like on this album but at the same time a lot of them get Old really quickly.
My #1 favorite on this album and one of my favorite (if not my VERY favorite) Simon & Garfunkel songs is America. I also really Love Mrs. Robinson, A Hazy Shade Of Winter, and Punky´s Dilemma (the boisenberry jam joke is very popular in our house).
Fakin´ It is nice but one of those songs that gets old. Same with At The Zoo. I really like Save the Life of My Child but it doesn´t really have a very deep or profound meaning or anything.
I like the Bookends theme but don´t really like Old Friends that much. And I can´t stand Voices of Old People.
I´d have to say Bridge Over Troubled Water is my favorite album and Bookends might even be my least favorite (although by a very small margin, like Bridge Over Troubled Water is 5 stars and Bookends is 4.6 or something). |

 | Ahhhhhhhhhhh...At last! THIS is my favourite album, I Love it to bits.
I played it again, for the first time in ages. And the moment Bookends Theme played a chill went down my spine.
I thought "this really places you into a faulse sence of security, if you have NEVER heard it before. You´d sit there thinking, "how nice!" then thwack!!! And I remember the first time I heard it and the smack in the face from the Synthesizer from ´Save The Life Of My Child´..WOW!
You´re down there in the crowd looking up at this lost child who has no where to go....You feel peoples hearts end up in their thoghts as he leaps to his death...Or does he?
I love to listen to ´America´ when traveling, it´s perfect. I can see in my minds eye this couple traverling across the country on a long jouney. See their faces and hear their chats and laughter echo down the bus.
Over ~ Paul conveys this feeling of being trapped in a none moving releationship so well. You can feel the anguish of this man not really knowing what to do or where to go. All he knows is that things are not the same and that the relationship has run it´s course.
With ´Voices Of Old People´ I always think of an interview with Art whne he spoke of recording their voices. Hiding mikes in French Bread etc..Images of Artie the spy. They are also very moving and sad, knowing that these people captured for a record 37 years ago are no longer here. These people were the age my Nan is now and kind of puts everything into perspective.
Old Friends ~ What a song for someone song you ng to write. At 25 I would have never even tried to imagine myself at 70 and still don´t and I´m heading for forty...Yikes And even though they are 62, 70 still seems along way off, although maybe they don´t think so. But how different they are from that image. The first time I heard this song it moved me to tears because it made such a powerful statement of friendship, longevity and old age. A big thing for a 25 eyars old guy.
Bookends ~ When I first heard those few words I found it moving. Now it means so much more because I´ve been through so much more. When I fist hear this song, I had two grandmothers, a Grandfather and plenty of Great Aunts and Uncles and how no true idea the meaning of the song.
Now, 15 or so years after first hearing it, I have one Grandmother (nan), no Grandfathers at all and a few no Great Aunts and one Great Uncle. Plus the loss of a dear friend of 20 years and so I now know the true meaning of this song and at times moves me to tears. Maybe that why I haven´t played this album for so long.
I am very aware that this is getting very long. So I shall stop on, what was, side one of the album. In a nutshell I love the whole album and more so because I now have a greater insight to birth, life and death and so can full appreaciate it´s complete meaning.

 | Yep. VofOP gets the chop. But that asunder, Micky is quite right. This is a cracker. And screams in at number two for me. Dipping to three if Bridge has a good day. Still can´t beat SOS. But a damn fine album. And who can forget the first time they heard SOS creeping into StheLofmChild! Classic. |

 | this is the only S&G studio album I got before the box set - the greatest hits was my first album, later I got one ag tape and then a committed PS fan. when i got Bookends I disliked it so much that i never got around to buying any more S&G until the boxset. Cos it is so popular here I´ve been listening to it again but no I still don´t like it. Of course America, Mrs Robinson and other songs on the album are good even great - but whole album together is very harsh sounding and creepy - Old people talking, StheLofMyC.
I´m enjoying the album discussions but are they PS albums or just S&G, or why did you leave out the PS songbook, which I think is an amazing album. |
