hi friends, I'm fairly new to the forum but id love to enlist your help. I'm in the process of doing research and writing a book about the Rhythm of the Saints album and Paul's life and music from that era (approx. 1988-1992). I've done some digging online and in various threads here and found some good things. if you could point me to any interviews, articles, reviews, videos, etc from that time, id be very grateful. I'm especially looking for the Born at the Right Time documentary, I'm having trouble finding it online. if anyone has a digital copy they could send me, that'd be great. I'm also confused as to whether the American Masters PBS special from this time is the same as Born at the Right Time. and I'm also looking for the Mark Steyn interview from this period. Ive read elsewhere that Paul did a press conference in the UK for the Rhythm of the Saints release, if anyone has video, audio or transcript of that, id love it. anything and all. thank you in advance! -greg

Greg, The American Masters PBS special is the same as the BART video. It may have been edited as running time is 90 mins as against 1.51 for the video.
There is a British TV show from 1991 that had references to the BART in 3 parts

Thanks Brenda. It's too funny when he forgets the words of YCCMA :) :)

Hi Greg, your work seems interesting but only for die hard PS fans.

the idea is to do a detailed and in depth research and reading of the rhythm of the saints album and era, in the vein of the 33 1/3 series of books about specific albums. ROTS has always seemed to exist in the shadows of Graceland and I want to shed a lot more light on what I think is maybe Paul's best album.

Really interesting project indeed.

For a very long time, I placed ROTS at the top. It is around that time I began as a fan.

I listened to it a lot. Simon also described his tour in 2011 as the ROTS revealer, that he was hearing a lot from people that they were actually prefering ROTS to Graceland.

But recently, I have gone the other way. No mistake: ROTS is great stuff. But maybe some sounds on it might sound a bit outdated (ex: keyboard piano) here and there.

Graceland has not gained any wrinkles. It is kind of outside of time.

I have always thought that the songs from ROTS "spread their wings" in live!
I really love this album but i enjoy most its songs in concert...

its interesting because i kind of feel the opposite way.
i don't think Graceland quite holds together as a complete album the way RoTS does. and Graceland sounds more dated to my ears (with that mid 80s sound) than RoTS does. but thats just my opinion. but don't get me wrong, they are both amazing albums and i love them a lot. haha!
:)

Paul has done as much advertising and interviews for ROTS and the upcoming tour with 150 shows worldwide with probably the best band (17 musicians)that ever appeared on any stage in the world than never before.

I think his original plan was to retire after that in favour of his Musical, whith which he had already begun before ROTS.

So there is a lot of material. I remember a statement that he appeared on british TV more than 5 times on one weekend.

He even was in Germany for the first and last time to give an interview on TV. And in several papers.

The Album sold about 5 Million copies compared to 14 Million "Gracelands" worldwide and I saw several comments who also rate it higher and as his best ever.

So greg there is a lot to be found, I have mainy material in German. The 1993 documentary should be found, it was aired even here.

I have the Mark Steyne interview on dvd but it is from 1988 before ROTS. Have not seen one from 1991 /1992 though. I also had the BART video converted to DVD. PAL and NTSC.

What I know is that he postponed the release of ROTS after friends had told him his voice is too silent compared to Graceland.

He finally thought it himself and the Album was remixed to make his voice more clear and present. It still is more in the background than on other Albums but this was intended.

At rocksbackpages.com there are a lot of articles in the library from Paul's career. Also several from the ROTS area. You have to subscribe. In the old days we had the fabulous Spanish site from José Luis and Jose Maria with lots of information.
