Paul Simon´s songs have always had such poetic, sophisticated lyrics, right from the beginning of his career, I was wondering if he has ever spoken or written about his favorite poetry-- Shakespeare, ee cummings, TS Eliot? Or others... I have one other particularly in mind, but want to see if anyone else mentions that other poet before I tell you what I am thinking!

Other than seamus Heaney and WB Yeats you mean?
He mentions Robert Frost & Emily Dickenson in one of his S&G songs. You already mentioned ee cummings that would have been my first choice. Of course there is also Derek Walcott.

Yes, of course, he does mention Dickinson and Frost in The Dangling Conversation, but then he is mocking the pretension of the snobs who drop these poetic names for show, and then talk about "analysis" and "the theatre" in the same vein.

I am thinking of a poet from LONG before Dickinson and Frost... ;)

Well, maybe not quite from the beginning ;)

Tom & Jerry - Hey, Schoolgirl

Oo-bop-a-loo-cha-bah, you're mine
Say, Woo-bop-a-loo-cha-bah, you're mine

Hey schoolgirl in the second row
The teacher's lookin' over so I gotta whisper way down low
You say, woo-bop-a-loo-cha-bah, let's meet
After school at three

She said, Hey, baby, there's a-one thing more
School is over at half past four
Maybe when we're older, then we can date
Ooo, let's wait

Hey schoolgirl in the second row
The teacher's lookin' over so I gotta whisper way down low
You say, woo-bop-a-loo-cha-bah, let's meet
After school at three

She said, Hey, baby, I gotta lot to do
It takes me hours then my homework's through
Someday we'll go steady so don't you fret
Ooo, not yet

Hey schoolgirl in the second row
The teacher's lookin' over so I gotta whisper way down low
You said, woo-bop-a-loo-cha-bah, let's meet
After school at three

Then she turned around to me with that gleam in her eye
She said I'm sorry if I passed you by
I'm gonna skip my homework, gonna cut my class
Bug outta here real fast

Hey school girl in the second row
Now we're goin' steady, hear the words I want you to know
Well it's oo-bop-a-loo-cha-ba, you're mine
I knew it all the time

Woo-bop-a-loo-cha-bah, a-ha you're mine
Woo-bop-a-loo-cha-bah, a-ha you're mine
