Paul Simon has announced that he is moving his entire solo catalogue from Warner Bros back to Sony/Legacy. This will come as a Surprise for Simon´s fans as he left Columbia/CBS in the late 1970s after disagreements with Columbia bosses over the release of the single Stranded In A Limousine which Simon accused the label of failing to promote.

Simon then signed to Warner Bros who released and promoted his next project, the One-Trick Pony film and supporting soundtrack album. Since then, all Paul Simon´s albums have been released on Warner Bros, including the massively successful Graceland and the most recent 2006 album Surprise, along with an alarming plethora of greatest hits compilations.

Since the move to Warner Bros, Simon gained control of the masters to his earlier solo recordings and in 1987, his first four solo albums, including the live album Live Rhymin´, were re-released on Warner Bros CDs, cassettes and vinyl. In 2004 a remastered deluxe version of all 9 solo albums were released on Warner´s Rhino label, including bonus material, out-takes and missing tracks.

It seems likely that the new album that Simon is reportedly finishing will be released on Sony records but whether all ten solo albums between 1972 and 2006 (not to mention one live album and all eight compilations released between 1988 and 2007) will also be re-released remains to be seen.

This has been fairly widely reported. There is an article about it here: http://www.showbiz411.com/2010/06/01/paul-simon-ma

and at the bottom of that page, links to other articles about the same story.

There is also an article here about Warner and how it has lost big name artists, including Paul Simon: http://www.hollywoodnews.com/2010/07/06/warner-mus

Further evidence that something is a foot - Paul Simon´s songs have been removed from i-tunes. Someone is asking about it here, along with Paul McCartney´s which have been removed because he is leaving EMI: http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/paul_mcc

I´m going to keep saying this until someone listens -- Simon should record with McCartney. Simon likes to work with other artists, so does McCartney. McCartney would benefit by working with Simon (who would be his most talented songwriting partner since John Lennon). Simon would also benefit by having a true musical genius to work with and play off of.

As I said a while back, they could call themselves "Paul and Paul" so that neither one takes top billing. On the other hand "Simon/McCartney" sounds like Lennon/McCartney or Simon and McCartney is slightly like Paul´s previous group.

In the same vein but not seriously, if I could photoshop, I would paste McCartney on a Bookends cover for Art, or take the profile of Paul leaning on Art´s back from Bridge and paste it on the Abbey Road cover leaning on McCartney instead.

I guess I have too much time on my hands!

I noticed Paul´s music was gone from iTunes (as I posted a while back ) but they are still available on amazon.com. Why would that be?

I was disappointed. I like to buy one-off recordings from the list of everyone´s favourite PS songs posted on this forum.

Well, I have a few CD´s from the Legacy collection, especially from Miles Davis, and if it is going to be reissued like this, yes, we can expect another Old material repackaging.

I believe most demos have been put out in 2004 with the solo boxset, so...maybe extensive liner notes, which we did not get in 2004 ? In any case, I don´t think I would replace my 2004 boxset. Enough is enough !

We will see.

I think that it is good that the CDs will all be available on one label but I am sure most fans with a full set of CDs (I have all the Warner CDs and tapes plus the 2004 boxset) would not be expected to buy them all again on Legacy. But people buying his back catalogue for the first time will be able to buy the CDs on the new label.

What I am concerned about is the CDs that will not make it to the Legacy label. Live Rhymin´ was not re-released in 2004 and The Concert In The Park is not available on VHS any more and as we know, was never released on DVD.

Will all the other DVDs make it to Legacy? You´re The One In Concert, Graceland: The African Concert, etc.

I am more excited about the forthcoming album which hopefully will get promoted heavily by Sony (for Legacy is not for new material, surely?)
