New song: Love in hard times

from Bodo , 2008-09-07 04:09:28

This summer Paul Simon gave a special gift to us when he played a new and unreleased composition at some shows of his European tour. It is rare these days that he writes a new song, Paul said before he played this wonderful guitar composition to the fans in Montreux, Switzerland. Thanks to Richard I can offer the download of the live recording of ´Love and hard times´.

Download : Love in hard times

Lyrics transcribed by Joey.

Love In Hard Times
By Paul Simon

God and his only son
Paid a courtesy call on Earth one Sunday morning
Orange blossoms opened their fragrant lips
Songbirds sang from the tips of cotton roots
Old folks wept
For his love in these hard times

´Well, better be going,´
Said the the restless lord to his son
´There are galaxies yet to be born
Creation is never done
Anyway these people are slobs here
If we stay it´s bound to be a mob scene´
Disappeared
And it´s just like love in hard times

I loved her the first time I saw her
I know that´s an old songwriting cliché
I loved her the first time I saw her
Can´t describe it any other way
Any other way

The light of her beauty is warm as a summer day
Clouds of antelopes roll by
No hint of rain
Pale blue sky
Just love, love, love, love, love

But the rains came
The tears burned
The windows rattled
The locks turned
It’s easy to be generous when you’re owed
It´s hard to be grateful
When you´re out of control

And love is gone

The light at the edge of the curtain was the quiet dove
The bedroom weaves in clicks and clacks
My heart and my mind will never last
When your hand takes mine
Thank god I found you tonight
Thank god I found you tonight
Thank god I found you

Paul Simon sues Japanese clockmaker

from Micky , 2008-07-18 19:47:27

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. singer and songwriter Paul Simon sued a Japanese clockmaker for $5 million (2.5 million pounds) for copyright infringement on Friday for claiming the company used one of his songs as a composition on their clocks.

Simon´s lawyers accused clock company Rhythm Watch Co Ltd, and its U.S. subsidiary Rhythm USA of using Simon´s song ´Bridge Over Troubled Water´ on 40,000 of its clocks in the last three years without his permission.

The lawsuit called the song ´one of the best known songs throughout the world in popular music´ and cited Rhythm´s ´Grand Nostalgia Clock´ as one that plays Simon´s song without permission as well as other popular songs including ´My Way.´

´Bridge Over Troubled Water´ was the title song of Simon and Art Garfunkel´s final album together, released in 1970.

Rhythm was established in Tokyo in 1950 and has its U.S. headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. It manufactures, distributes and sells clocks in Japan, the United States, India and Hong Kong, the lawsuit said.

A license fee for using the song would have cost more than $1 million and the lawsuit estimated Rhythm had profited more than $5 million from the sale of clocks that use the song.

Paul Simon to play Liverpool Pops

from matthew , 2008-04-02 06:58:54

One of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time, PAUL SIMON will be returning to the Summer Pops on Sunday 6th July.

Simon is revered now as he ever was, over 40 years into a career which has spawned such timeless classics as ´Bridge Over Troubled Waters´, ´Homeward Bound´, ´Mrs Robinson´, ´50 Way to leave Your Lover´ and dozens of other hits, along with albums as unique and important as ´Still Crazy After All These Years´ and ´Graceland´ to name but two. Legend is not overstating it.

Speaking about his 2002 Pops appearance, Simon said: ´Liverpool was the very best concert on my European tour and the audience were also the best. I really enjoyed the show. What an audience, the reaction was really fabulous. I can’t wait to come back.´

Famously, the north west of England inspired him to pen one of his greatest hits.

In 1965, Paul Simon had been touring around the north west, appearing at clubs from Birkenhead to Widnes. Widnes railway station, has become the stuff of music legend, thanks to a home and lovesick Simon. It was here, that he had the inspiration for the song ´Homeward Bound´, Simon and Garfunkel’s first UK hit. It was whilst waiting for the milk train at Widnes Station, after a local folk club gig, he yearned to be back in London, in the arms of his beloved Kathy.

During his distinguished career Simon has been the recipient of many honours and awards including 12 Grammy Awards, three of which (´Bridge Over Troubled Water´, ´Still Crazy After All These Years´ and ´Graceland´) were albums of the year.

In 2003 he was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as half of the duo Simon and Garfunkel. He is an inductee of The Songwriters Hall of Fame and is in the Rock n´ Roll Hall of Fame both as a member of Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist.

Paul, Holland, Hullabaloo + Humour

from Bodo Malo , 2007-10-07 06:48:59

For his next big project, Holland wants to revive the reputation of a man he never met - his late father-in-law. Rory McEwen hosted Hullabaloo, one of the first ever popular music shows on television, which coincidentally had many similarities with Later... ´It had a house band, with Long John Baldrey, and guests such as the Spinners, Sonny Boy Williamson and Fitzroy Coleman.´

McEwen would play the guitar with his brother Eck in between introducing the acts; he once turned down the Rolling Stones because he thought they weren´t good enough. Holland wants to get the shows reissued on DVD. Recently, Holland and Christabel had dinner with Paul Simon, who remembered Hullabaloo. ´They both agreed that it was the first music show on television to feature non-mainstream music and that its great strength was that Rory could both introduce and play with the guests. At this, Christabel said, ´That´s odd, I think I´ve married my dad´. Paul Simon shrugged in a very New York Jewish way and said, ´You wouldn´t be the first girl to do that.´

Paul on tour with Hugh Masekela

from Ans , 2007-08-12 15:44:36

Masekela and Simon reunite over Darfur

LEGENDARY musicians Hugh Masekela and Paul Simon - who played together in the controversial Graceland tour of 1986 - are to reunite in a series of concerts aimed at prompting politicians to end the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Beginning next month with a concert in New York, the pair will launch a worldwide tour, with the support of other musicians including the singers Youssou N´Dour and Angelica Kidjo. The first performance is set to coincide with a meeting of the UN heads of state on September 25.
´It will be targeted at people who can be effective,´ said Masekela, who is in Edinburgh for a concert at the Queen´s Hall tonight as part of the Fringe. ´We want to get the heads of state and ministers and say to them, ´This is serious. You have to do something about it.´´

Sudan´s government and the pro-government Arab militias are accused of war crimes against Darfur´s black African population. An estimated 250,000 people have died, with two million more living in refugee camps.

´Are we going to sit around and watch another Rwanda, and just sigh, ´This is bad,´´ said Masekela, who is an African Union goodwill ambassador for Darfur. ´I called Paul and said, ´I´m working with the Darfur people - I need your help.´ He said, ´You just tell me what it is and I´ll be there.´

´We will do the concert in a place where we can get 500 people or so - and focus on people who can do something about it. Then we want to do a tour and hope it helps.´

Masekela, 68, has never shied away from controversy. His song Bring Him Back Home became an anthem of the campaign to free Nelson Mandela, but his involvement with Simon´s Graceland tour brought accusations of breaking a cultural boycott of South Africa.

Simon and Garfunkel set for tour

from josh , 2007-07-17 16:23:48

Taken from the Australian newspaper´Hearald Sun´:

PROMOTERS are negotiating to bring legendary folk duo Simon and Garfunkel to Australia.

Dates have been tentatively locked in for early next year, with two rival promoters now bidding.

The pair, whose infighting over money is legendary, last re-formed for a tour in 2004.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reportedly demanded $1.1 million between them for each show.

The new tour will follow the release of a vintage concert recording, Live 1969, in September.

The duo´s last Australian tour was in 1983.

After shows in New York and Japan in 1993 they played at 2003´s Grammy Awards, and a tour that year earned $73 million. Shows in 2004 earned $35 million.

The duo have sold more than 40 million albums with hits including The Sound of Silence, I Am a Rock, Hazy Shade of Winter, Mrs Robinson and Bridge Over Troubled Water.

SIMON HAS NO INTEREST IN HIS LEGACY

from MrBeerbelly , 2007-06-27 01:26:01

Veteran singer/songwriter PAUL SIMON couldn´t care less how his body of work is perceived after he dies. The Sound Of Silence singer, 65, prefers to focus his energies on making music than worry about his legendary status. He says, ´I don´t have much interest in my legacy. ´No doubt, some of my songs will be played after I´m gone, and I don´t know that it matters. I don´t think too much about what matters. ´You just keep going forward. You can´t have an overview at the same time you´re working on the details.´

60's - Mr Simon's Big Trip

from Bodo , 2007-05-22 05:44:01

On June 5 UK BBC Radio 2 will air a special about Paul Simons time in the UK during the early 60´s

Mr Simon´s Big Trip uncovers the real story of Paul Simon´s British residency, and the part it played in his creative formation.

For years, people have been fascinated by the ´missing´ 13 months in the life and career of Paul Simon preceding the rise to success in America of Simon and Garfunkel.

Simon spent what is probably one of the most famous ´gap´ years in music history travelling around England, writing songs, playing tiny folk club venues and meeting future legends of the folk scene, including Bert Jansch and Martin Carthy. Homeward Bound was famously penned on Widnes Station, and many of his most famous lyrics can be traced to British roots.

The programme includes interviews with Martin Carthy, Brian Protheroe, Al Stewart and many more and features a hitherto unheard Paul Simon song, The Northern Line, recorded in an Exeter folk club in 1965.

The BBC Radio 2 60s Season marks the anniversary of the ´Summer of Love´ and the network´s 40th birthday in September. BBC Radio 2 takes listeners on a magical mystery tour of the Sixties with a season of summer programming celebrating the music and culture of this influential decade.

Rock and roll feuds of fame

from MrBeerbelly , 2007-03-12 07:47:56

Some of the greatest teamings also created great friction
By DAVID HINCKLEY
DAILY NEWS CRITIC-AT-LARGE
Monday, March 12th 2007, 4:00 AM

When Simon and Garfunkel were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, Paul Simon drolly suggested the Hall might consider a special wing for all the inducted groups whose members didn´t get along with each other.
Besides the obvious reference to his own ups and downs with one time partner Art Garfunkel, Simon noted the Everly Brothers, who didn´t speak for a decade after Phil smashed his guitar and stormed off the stage at Knotts Berry Farm in 1973.

Simon also mentioned the fractious Eagles, several of whose members were around that time doing separate tours. (Drummer/singer Don Henley would finish his version of ´Desperado´ by saying, ´Accept no imitations.´)

Simon´s point, in any case, was that creating memorable music has never guaranteed creating internal harmony.

I've Got Some Real Estate

from MrBeerbelly , 2007-03-09 00:47:27

Musician Paul Simon is a neighbour, and for just under $25 million you can enjoy your own sounds of silence on this very private 6-acre spread next to a preserve and overlooking the ocean in Montauk. ´The person that´s going to want this property is looking for seclusion,´ says listing agent Bonny Aarons of the Corcoran Group.

The newly constructed 4,700-square-foot traditional home has five bedrooms, 7– baths and ´Old World charm,´ Aarons says. Amenities include stone fireplaces, a library, a home theatre, a wine cellar, staff rooms and a heated Gunite pool.
Developer Tom Gessler says, ´I put a lot of love into this house.” The main house will be completed in early May and is wired with ´smart technology´ throughout; a guest house will take another year to complete. The property sits atop a 90-foot bluff, which Gessler says protects the home from tidal surges during hurricanes.

Gessler, who has been building on the East End for 15 years, says, ´Montauk is low-key ... You don´t have the stuffiness that East Hampton sometimes has.´

Besides Paul Simon, other neighbours include Bruce Ratner, owner of the New Jersey Nets, photographer Peter Beard, and J. Crew chief executive Mickey Drexler, who recently bought the estate Andy Warhol once co-owned.

Added to Sound Archive

from MrBeerbelly , 2007-03-07 01:08:37

Recordings by the The Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground and Paul Simon are among those that have been selected by the US Librarian of Congress to be preserved in the National Recordings Registry this year.

The Rolling Stones´ ´(I Can´t Get No) Satisfaction´, Velvet Underground´s ´Velvet Underground and Nico´ and Simon´s ´Graceland´ were selected, along with ´Blue Suede Shoes´ by Carl Perkins, ´Be My Baby´ by The Ronettes, and ´We Shall Overcome´ by Pete Seeger.

Each year, members of the public and a panel of music, sound and preservation experts nominate several recordings to be deemed ´culturally important´ and added to the National Recording Registry.

The selected recordings are preserved for future generations in a special sound archive, created by Congress in 2000. It now contains 225 recordings.

Geniuses, icons flock to Monterey

from MrBeerbelly , 2007-03-05 06:22:07

A convention of geniuses, icons and mavericks is expected to converge in Monterey this week.

The 2007 TED conference -- TED is the acronym for Technology Entertainment Design -- will feature 50 speakers ranging from President Clinton to NBA star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to musician Paul Simon during its run in Monterey beginning Wednesday.

´Instead of a subject-matter theme, we are simply going to put on stage 50 remarkable people... and let them share whatever it is they are passionate about,´ according to promotional material circulated by TED.

The annual TED conference has been held in Monterey since its re-conception in 1990. The 1984 TED featured the unveiling of the Macintosh computer and the Sony compact disc, but the event lost money.

The event now sells out well in advance. Registration for the 2008 conference is already closed. Passes to this year´s conference cost $4,400, but not just anyone with $4,400 can attend.

TED is an invitation-only event; people can apply to be invited and, according to TED officials, ´a wide variety of leading thinkers and doers from all fields of endeavor´ are welcomed.

The lineup this year includes an eclectic array of politicians, authors, artists, venture capitalists, poets, nanotechnologists, musicians and scientists.

They include Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin; musicians Tracy Chapman and They Might Be Giants; famed cave explorer Bill Stone; and author Isabel Allende.

The conference ends on Saturday.

Mr Ramos-Horta bought the guitar in Memphis.

Garfunkel is begging again

from MrBeerbelly , 2007-03-02 02:03:56

Tuesday, February 27, 2007
Art says that he and Paul Simon may record together again in the futureArt Garfunkel has revealed that there is a possibility that he and former partner Paul Simon may record more music together in the future.

The duo are famous for their tumultuous working partnership, and have reunited numerous times since their split in 1970, only to publicly and acrimoniously fall out on nearly every occasion, vowing never to perform together again.

(picture: Art Garfunkel begging for a hitchhike on Simons next album)

Art says: ´We played the game. When Paul and I were buddies in junior high school at age 13, we purposely had a mock splitting up - just to create gossip at our school. I think that´s very telling.´

Their last reunion tour happened over two years ago, in 2004, and for the moment, Art admits they won´t work together any time soon.

´Do I have a plan to work with Mr Simon again? No. Is there a possibility of more recorded music with Simon and Garfunkel? Yes, I suppose there is a possibility.

´We are friends. I had lunch with him the other day. We hang out more comfortably than we used to, so the availability of working together seems there. But we have no plans. I wonder what he would say?´ he smiles.

Simon Awarded Gershwin Prize

Singer-songwriter honored by Library of Congress.
Paul Simon is going Gershwin.

The Library of Congress is awarding its first ever Gershwin Prize for Popular Song to Simon for the singer-songwriter´s lifetime contributions to music. The award, named in honor of George and Ira Gershwin, will be given on an annual basis as part of the library´s collection.

´Few songwriters have had a broader influence or contributed more to song genres than Paul Simon. Because of the depth, range and sheer beauty of his music, as well as his ability to bridge people of cultures, he is the perfect first recipient of this prestigious award,´ said librarian of Congress James Billington.

Added Simon: ´I am grateful to be the recipient of the Gershwin Prize and doubly honored to be the first.´

Simon is a 12-time Grammy winner and two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- as both a solo artist and as a member of the iconic duo Simon and Garfunkel.

Simon will perform in concert on May 23 in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the event. Other artists, not yet announced, will also perform.

Paul contributes with Hernández

from Ans , 2007-01-29 03:38:05

San Francisco (California), USA - Six Degrees Records has announced the signing of Spanish Harlem Orchestra, whose third album, United We Swing, will be released on May 15, 2007 worldwide.

United We Swing is a collection of infectious Latin music from an all-star lineup of living legends. The new release follows the Grammy award-winning album, Across 110th St., which won for Best Salsa Album in 2004, and their 2002 Grammy nominated debut album, Un Gran Dia en el Barrio.

Directed by world-renowned pianist/arranger/producer Oscar Hernández, the 13 member Spanish Harlem Orchestra has established itself as standard bearers of contemporary Latin music. Using the most accomplished players in the New York Hispanic community, Hernández brings together an amalgamation of strong performances from Ray De La Paz, Willie Tórres, and Marco Bermúdez on vocals, with a handful of top musicians including John Walsh, Pete Nater, Jimmy Bosch, Dan Reagan, Mitch Frohman, Luisíto Quintero, George Delgado, Jorge Gonzalez, and Hector ‘Maximo’ Rodriguez. United We Swing was recorded in November 2006 in Englewood, NJ.

“I am excited and extremely proud of our third CD United We Swing,” says Oscar Hernández. “The chemistry that Spanish Harlem Orchestra has achieved from performing and touring the last couple of years is reflected in the uncompromised musical excellence of this recording. Each individual musician has contributed to the hardcore swing we strive for as an ensemble. It is a great honor to have musical icon Paul Simon contribute his extraordinary talent to our sound with SHO.”

United We Swing features 13 new songs including a special guest appearance by Paul Simon (Late In The Evening/Tarde En La Noche). Hernández built a strong relationship with Paul Simon after arranging and producing the music for his Broadway musical ´The Capeman,´ which is based on the real life story of Salvador Agron. United We Swing is scheduled for release on May 15, 2007 on Six Degrees Records.

Montreux jazz 2007 with Paul?

from Bodo , 2007-01-28 07:15:33

The Montreux Jazz festival organisers are in negotiation with Paul Simon at the moment to bring him back on the festival plan for the summer 2007.
The final artist list will be announced on April 16.

These would be thrilling news for us, because a concert by Paul in Switzerland this summer would maybe include a full tour trough Europe too.

Paul played at the Montreux Jazz festival in the year 2002, a very special and intimitate concert in front of only 2000 people which has been filmed too. Later the song ´The Coast´ from that concert appeared as a bonus track on the extra single for the ´On My Way, Don´t Know Where I´m Goin´ collection.

On the picture above you see the group of fans from this site who met each other at the Montreux 2002 concert.

Michael Brecker died

Following a two and a half year battle with MDS and then leukemia, Michael Brecker passed away on January 13 2007.

Michael Brecker has been a good friend of Paul Simon since the mid 70´s, when he appeared on ´Still crazy after all these years´. In 1991/1992 he toured as a special guest for more than 150 concerts together with Paul on the ´Born at the right time tour´ having his own Michael Brecker solo break. More than 15 years after the famous Central Park concert in 1991 I think it would be a special honour to release it finally on DVD and include Michael Breckers stunning 12 minute wind instruments solo for the first time.

Grammy nomination for 'Surprise' ?

from Matthias , 2006-11-21 04:26:37

Paul Simon’s “Surprise” album will maybe one of the nominated for Best Album of the Year on next Grammy Awards.
Acoording to Roger Friedman from FOX News, members of the Recording Academy must have their preliminary ballots all voted and back in by Thursday for this year´s Grammy Awards. And then things get interesting.
The Best Album nominations are certain to include Gnarls Barkley´s hit CD, ´St. Elsewhere,´ and that album´s single, ´Crazy,´ is destined for the Best Record category. But beyond that, what?

The four other Best Album nominees could be Paul Simon´s ´Surprise,´ which actually was the best recording this year — although that doesn´t really guarantee it anything in this age of diminished standards.
The three remaining slots could go to a variety of different offerings, including obvious but not definite choices like Bob Dylan´s ´Modern Times,´ the Dixie Chicks´ ´Taking the Long Way´ and James Blunt´s ´Back to Bedlam.´ Expect Blunt to clean up at this year´s awards, with nominations for Best New Artist, Best Song and Record for ´You´re Beautiful,´ in addition to Best Album. There´s also Bruce Springsteen´s ´We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions,´ which will be taken very seriously by voters.

Bridging the gap

from Pam , 2006-09-28 21:41:38

From the San Diego Union Tribune:

Bridging the gap

Paul Simon promises old hits and a new ´Surprise´ on tap Tuesday
By George Varga
UNION-TRIBUNE POP MUSIC CRITIC

September 28, 2006

Music, like life, can be a balancing act, as Paul Simon knows all too well.

Now, on the concluding leg of his first solo tour since 2001, he is mixing in five songs each night from his superb new album “Surprise” with several decades worth of his hits and choice album cuts. The trick is to perform his best-known songs live in a way that keeps them as fresh for him as the more edgy selections from the aptly titled “Surprise,” on which he fruitfully collaborated with ambient-music pioneer Brian Eno.

“I don´t go out and say: ´I won´t play the big hits,´ ” said Simon, who performs here with his multinational band Tuesday at Viejas Concerts at Bayside. “Because if I went out to see some artist who I´ve liked for a long time, I´d want to hear the hits. My feeling is, however, that if the song is a good song, you can play it a lot of ways and it should still be a good song.

“But just because I´m not trying to suck up to an audience doesn´t mean I´m indifferent. I like it to be an entertaining night; I just want it to be interesting. That, for me, is the essence. So, since I´m giving myself what I want – in terms of the musicians I work with and how the songs are played and rethought – I feel like I should give the audience what I´m guessing they want.”

Both as a solo artist and as one-half of Simon & Garfunkel, whose most recent reunion tour played to a full house here at Cox Arena in 2003, this New York native has long been noted for his meticulous craftsmanship and artistic vision.

Simon´s albums, including “Surprise,” are finely honed works that showcase his stylistic versatility, artistic daring and lyrically refined explorations of love, alienation, whimsy and world-weary resignation. Yet, whether he is doing a solo tour or collaborating with on-again/off-again musical partner Art Garfunkel, he regards his concerts as a welcome chance to let his songs grow and evolve. He lovingly reshapes them, without losing touch with their emotional essence.

“I think what goes on in the case of Simon & Garfunkel, or any act whose work was done decades ago, is that there´s an emotional memory of what it sounds like, which may not be a true reflection of what it actually sounds like,” Simon, 64, said last week from the New York home he shares with his wife, singer-songwriter Edie Brickell, and their three kids.

“And I try, with Simon & Garfunkel, to imagine what that emotional memory was and stay true to that. And, for me, it´s two guys and a guitar. ... As long as (we) came back and touched on that, it didn´t matter if (we) changed a song a little, or reharmonized it a little, or took out the words (we) didn´t really feel like singing anymore, for whatever reason.”

Simon´s desire to keep his songs in a constant state of rebirth is a jazz-inspired aesthetic rarely heard in pop music, let alone from someone who has sold tens of millions of albums and scored 28 Top 40 hits (13 on his own, 15 with Simon & Garfunkel).

“It is a jazz aesthetic,” he said. “Except for the fact that the subtleties in my songs get worked out over time, and then they´re not improvisational every night, which would be a true jazz aesthetic.

“My thought about the nuances is they are usually things that help me sing, and help me (achieve) what it feels like to be in a rhythm that´s bobbing along, and it´s liberating. It means I can phrase (songs) differently, I can rethink the story and tell it in a different way.”

Thinking in different ways is precisely what Simon wanted to do by teaming with Eno, who first rose to prominence in the early 1970s as a member of the art-rock band Roxy Music.

Eno, who has produced landmark records by David Bowie, U2 and Talking Heads, co-wrote two of the songs for “Surprise,” on which his main credit is “sonic landscape.” Rhythmically speaking, “Surprise” is atypically straightforward and streamlined compared to Simon´s recent albums. But dig under the surface, and all kinds of aurally subversive treats are waiting to be discovered.

“What´s beneath the surface, however you may define the surface, that´s a crucial part of the songwriting process,” Simon said. “The way the tracks are built, and the shifts in the color and the rhythm, had an affect upon the writing. So, for me, probably more than for almost all listeners, what´s said right beneath the surface is as interesting as what the final layer produces, the final layer being the words.

“Now, if I did it again, I´d probably be inclined to reverse the process, just for the sake of clearing out that way of thinking. ... That would produce another kind of song, or give me a way of keeping the process fresh. And that´s one of the things I´m a little obsessive about. I guess I´m easily bored, so I really try to find a way I can look at the creative process from an angle that is interesting. And it´s interesting because it´s fresh to me. I don´t like doing an imitation of what I do.”

Simon´s commercial heyday with his pioneering “Graceland” album is now two decades behind him. And while he doesn´t plan to tour or record again with Garfunkel (although their friendship is back on track), he does expect to remain a perpetual work in progress.

“I can´t tell who my audience is when I make a record, but I can when I perform,” Simon said. “And what the audience is, that I can see, seems to be divided between an ´upper demographic´ – to use a euphemism – and 20-year-olds. And of the upper demographic, that group seems to be divided.

“There are people who would just like to hear Simon & Garfunkel songs and whatever the most famous hits were, and there´s the other group that´s kind of excited by the fact I´m still making new music. Because that´s their personality type, too; they haven´t yielded to inertia. They like the fact I´m changing, because they´re trying to change, too.”

Winner of a free concert ticket

from Bodo , 2006-09-21 13:20:50

Congratulations to Mandi Munyikwa!

She has won a free ticket to see Paul Simon in concert next November in Dublin.

The ticket was sponsored by a fan who had so much fun at the last Paul Simon concert, that he/she decided to invite someone to a Paul Simon show who has never seen him in concert before, and can not afford it.

Mandi was selected from the fan-database together with 120 other fans (from staates where Paul will give a concert in the next months) who have never seen Paul Simon live. They have been asked to email us why they never had the chance to see Paul in concert, and Mandi then was selected as the winner.

The Email Mandi wrote:

To the People that are offering me the chance of a lifetime!!!

The reason i´ve never been able to see Paul Simon live is because his
masterpiece is older than me!!
I was born and raised in Zimbabwe, but when people ask, i say i was born and
raised on Graceland!
I´ve been a fan for as long as i can remember!Singing songs and quoting
lyrics like they were my mother tongue.
I am living in Dublin now, while i am studying in University, and the first
thing i did with my summer Paycheck was buy the new album! And it was worth the wait for me!
Paul Simon will be in Dublin on the 8th of November, and the thing keeping
me from seeing him this time round is the money! I am a student, and the
tickets are quite expensive (but worth it i´m sure!), but they are the price
of a weeks rent for me, and this is something i cannot afford.
I could not believe it when i saw that Paul Simon was going to be playing in
Ireland, i thought that i´d never get the chance to see him live!
I hope that it is possible for me to go and see him... this may be cliche,
but it would be a dream come true for me!!

Thank you so much for this opportunity!

Sorry for all others who wrote so nice and enthusiastic emails, only 1 could win...

Have a great time Mandi!!
And please report us from your first concert

No other Europe dates 2006?

from Bodo , 2006-09-04 05:00:30

For some of you this could be one of the worst days this year.

A fan who visited the concert in Atlantic City told me she was speaking with Vincent Nguini (guitar player), and he told her that there will be no more other dates in Europe.

If you want to see Paul live in 2006 you definately now have to fly to Ireland or the British Island.
Ask in the forum if some people there would be so nice to help you on buying tickets.

So, let´s hope for 2007...

Simon family sings for a friend

from Micky , 2006-08-16 12:44:33

~* Brickell´s and Simon´s songs for a friend *~

Just the chance to hear Paul Simon play an acoustic set Aug. 26 at the Music Hall at Fair Park is the closest most people will come to being invited inside the home of one of America´s foremost composers and most zealously private celebrities. But he is the second act on the bill. It´s his wife, Dallas-raised Edie Brickell and her band, the New Bohemians, who are headlining the show as a benefit for Edie´s childhood friend, Dallas actor Robert Meadows.

The mom connection

From the lean years of single motherhood until this very day, Edie´s mom, Larry, and Robert´s mom, Charlene, have remained best friends who have supported each other through life´s adversities. Last October, Robert suffered a brain injury when he was brutally attacked during a robbery at a 7-Eleven. With his medical bills already topping $1.5 million, Edie is doing for Robert what their mothers would do for each other – whatever it takes. Paul, who also is friends with the Meadows family, volunteered to lend his talents. The couple then drafted 15-year-old guitar player Tyler Dow Bryant, from Edie´s mom´s hometown, and his band to play a set. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com or by calling 214-373-8000 or 972-647-5700.For information about Robert, go to http://www.robertcmeadowsfund.com/about_robert.html

Jazzfestival in Montreux

from Bodo , 2002-01-23 00:00:00

According to a spanisch press agency (thanks to Jose Maria Escudero!), Paul Simon will perform at the Jazz Festival in Montreux - Switzerland this year!. The festival will take place from 5th - 20th July 2002, but it's not clear on which day Paul will play. However, it seems fixed that he takes part.
It seems as if Paul likes to give concerts on such events, he also played last year at the 'New Orleans Jazz Festival', for the first time in his career
Speculations about more concerts in Europe are welcome, ... why should he make this long travel to Europe with his band, instruments a.s.o. for only one show? ;-)

Simon´s latest disc, ´Surprise,´ marries his trademark melodic and
lyrical sensibility with lush electronic textures, courtesy of Brian
Eno. Preparing for Simon´s summer tour, his veteran band plans nine
weeks of rehearsals to translate the new sound to the stage. ´Not only
will those sounds be in the new songs, we´re using them as a palette,´
says guitarist Mark Stewart. ´Environmental sounds are even finding
their way into Slip Slidin´ Away.´

Surprise drops to 20 in UK chart

from Simon Evans , 2006-06-26 03:53:42

Surprise dropped a disappointing 16 places to 20 in this week´s UK album chart. Clearly the ´buzz´ created around its release has worn off. A pity there isn´t a tour planned for the UK, which would inevitably stimulate sales again.

Surprise still in UK Top 5

Surprise has stayed at No 4 in the new UK album chart, released today. The album was released on June 5 in the UK and went straight into the charts at No 4 last week. Internationally the album has tended to drop down charts after it´s initial entry, which just goes to show how much the UK still loves him after all these years!
